Physical Activity Consensus Statement

A consensus statement on the benefits of physical activity for people with long term health conditions, including safety and risks, has been published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. This consensus was led by Movement Medicine in collaboration with Sport England, who made clear in their consensus recommendations that the advice does not apply to people living with ME/CFS and Long COVID.

Long COVID Physio are proud to have been invited to collaborate with Movement Medicine, Sport England and Physios for ME, in providing appropriate messaging on ME/CFS and Long COVID with signposting to resources on safe and effective rehabilitation for people living with Long COVID.

On the Movement Medicine website they state: “The list of medical conditions covered by this consensus statement is not exhaustive. For instance, Chronic Fatigue Syndromes/ME and Long COVID were excluded from this study as evidence regarding the risks of physical activity in these conditions is evolving”.

Movement Medicine have also provided a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page with answers to how the statements relate to specific audiences, including people living with Long COVID (question 8) and people living with ME/CFS (question 7). The infographic produced alongside the consensus statement also provides a statement that the list of medical conditions covered by this consensus statement is not exhaustive. For instance, ME/CFS and Long COVID were excluded from this study as evidence regarding the risks of physical activity in these conditions is evolving”.
